The short answer

Dubrovnik usually docks at Gruž, about 2 miles from the Old Town. City buses run to Pile Gate (€2.50 on the bus). The city limits cruise visitors to 4,000 at a time and two ships at once, but the walls can still be very crowded.

  2. Walk the City Walls right away (they open at 08:00 in Jun–Jul). Go counter-clockwise from Pile.
  3. Explore the Stradun and side streets.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Walls are steep and exposed; very hot in summer.
  • Crowds at Pile Gate around midday.
  • Full buses back to Gruž.
  • If tendering, add 20–30 minutes each way.

Do this

  • Buy walls tickets only from the official webshop or ticket office.
  • Carry water on the walls; there are few stops.
  • Lokrum island is a cool escape by boat from the old harbour.
