The short answer

Skjolden sits at the far inner end of the Sognefjord, the world's longest fjord sail-in. The ship docks 1.2 km from a very small village. The big sights are 6-80 km away, and there is no public transport, so book tours.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • No public transport and very few taxis. Without a tour you are limited to walking.
  • Tours to Sognefjellet and glaciers are weather dependent.
  • Very small village; few services.

Do this

  • Book tours early; supply is small.
  • Bring warm layers for Sognefjellet.
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • The Sognefjord itself is not a World Heritage fjord, but the Nærøyfjord branch is. Since 2026, ships under 10,000 gross tons sailing in World Heritage fjords must be zero-emission.
  • Norway has no cruise passenger tax in 2026. A national fee of NOK 100 per passenger per 24 hours in port is proposed from January 1, 2027, if approved (reported by The Local Norway, March 2026). Norway's separate local tourist tax of up to 3% applies to hotel stays, not cruise passengers.

Accessibility

Docked. The 1.2 km walk to the village is along a road. Tours involve coach seats and some uneven ground.

Money

Norwegian krone (NOK). Cards, including tap-to-pay, work almost everywhere. Many places take no cash. Bring a card with no foreign transaction fee.
