The short answer

Leknes is the gateway to the Lofoten islands. The town is 3 km from the pier, and the postcard villages are far away. A shuttle and local buses exist, but a tour or rental car is the easiest way to see Lofoten in one day.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Distances are long and roads narrow; one traffic delay can make you miss the ship.
  • If tendering, add time for the tender line.
  • Weather changes quickly.

Do this

  • If you rent a car, book far ahead and leave a 90-minute margin.
  • Midnight sun runs May to August.
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • Norway has no cruise passenger tax in 2026. A national fee of NOK 100 per passenger per 24 hours in port is proposed from January 1, 2027, if approved (reported by The Local Norway, March 2026). Norway's separate local tourist tax of up to 3% applies to hotel stays, not cruise passengers.

Accessibility

Docked ships give step-free access; tenders are harder. Village streets are uneven, and Lofotr has some gravel paths.

Money

Norwegian krone (NOK). Cards, including tap-to-pay, work almost everywhere. Many places take no cash. Bring a card with no foreign transaction fee.
