The short answer

Malaga is one of the easiest ports: the city starts at the port gate. A public bus links the Levante terminals to Plaza de la Marina whenever a cruise ship is in. The Alcazaba fortress costs 7 euros, or 10 euros with Gibralfaro castle, and is free on Sundays from 2:00 pm.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Very hot in summer; the Alcazaba is steep with uneven stone paths.
  • The Alhambra in Granada is about a 2-hour drive each way (unverified) and needs tickets booked far ahead; do it only on a ship tour.

Do this

  • Sunday after 2:00 pm the Alcazaba is free but busier.
  • Muelle Uno has shops and cafes right by the port.
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • Alhambra (Granada) tickets are name-specific and sell out (not verified in this research).

Accessibility

The city center is flat. The Alcazaba and Gibralfaro have steep slopes and steps; wheelchair access is limited (not verified). An elevator to the Alcazaba is reported (not verified).

Money

Euro (EUR). Visa and Mastercard work in most shops, restaurants and museums; tap-to-pay is common. Carry 20-40 euros in cash for small cafes, toilets, markets and some buses. Use a bank ATM (inside a bank) and always choose to be charged in euros, not dollars, when a card machine or ATM asks.
