The short answer

Istanbul ships use Galataport in the Karaköy area, right on the Bosphorus near the old city. It is the world's first underground cruise terminal. Both airports are about 40 km away, and traffic can make the trip much longer than 40 minutes.

Terminals & docks

One underground cruise terminal at Galataport, Karaköy (Beyoğlu). Capacity: three ships and 15,000 passengers a day. Luggage storage for 15,000 items and a left-luggage service. 2,400 underground parking spaces, shared with the shopping area.

Check-in

  • Galataport lists a left-luggage service (useful on disembarkation day).
  • Allow extra time for Istanbul traffic.

What trips people up

  • Istanbul has two big airports on two continents. Check which one you land at.
  • Traffic can turn a 40-minute ride into 90 minutes or more.
  • Check entry rules for Turkey for US citizens before you go (not verified here).

Do this

  • Spend 2 nights before the cruise; there is a lot to see.
  • Use a pre-booked transfer for the airport run.
Homeward bound

Leaving the ship: back to the airport

The same routes run in reverse. On the last morning everyone leaves at once, so lines for taxis and buses are at their longest. Book flights home for the afternoon or later, and arrange your ride in advance if you can.
