The short answer

You dock right in the city, a short walk from Plaza de España. Mount Teide is the big draw, but there is no direct public bus from Santa Cruz, so you need a tour, taxi or rental car. The easy do-it-yourself trip is the tram to the old town of La Laguna.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Teide is too far for public transport on a cruise day.
  • Teide cable car closes in high wind or ice, often with little notice.
  • Altitude of 3,555 m can affect people with heart or breathing problems.
  • Teide can be cold while the coast is warm. Bring a jacket.

Do this

  • Check the 'Teide Today' status page on the cable car website the morning of your call.
  • The Ten+ app gives the cheapest tram fare (€1.10).
  • Most Canary and Madeira cruise calls happen in the cooler months, roughly October to April (typical pattern; confirm on your line's schedule).
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • Teide summit trail needs a free permit from the national park, booked ahead.
  • Canary Islands cruise tax: no Canary-wide tax or daily cap on cruise passengers could be confirmed for 2026. Checked: Puertos de Tenerife cruise and fees pages (no text), Las Palmas port site (blocked), island tourism boards. Ask your cruise line before you go.

Accessibility

Tenerife tram holds AENOR universal accessibility certification (Metrotenerife). Waterfront is flat. La Laguna's old town is mostly flat. Teide's top station has rough volcanic ground.

Money

Euro (€). Cards widely accepted. Keep coins for the tram machine.
