Ponta Delgada

The short answer

At the Portas do Mar terminal you step off 200 m from downtown. The famous crater lakes (Sete Cidades) and the hot-spring valley (Furnas) are out of town; buses exist but are slow, so a taxi, car or tour works better. A €3 eco-tax applies to cruise passengers aged 10 and over.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Weather changes fast; crater lakes are often hidden in cloud.
  • Buses to the big sights are slow and infrequent.
  • If you are sent to the commercial port, it is 2 km out.

Do this

  • Check Sete Cidades webcams or the weather before driving up; if cloudy, choose Furnas or town.
  • Azores calls are often on spring and fall transatlantic repositioning cruises (Wikivoyage).
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • Azores maritime eco-tax: €3 per cruise passenger aged 10+, charged since 1 January 2025; charged only at the first Azores island on the same trip (Portos dos Açores). Usually built into cruise charges.

Accessibility

Portas do Mar is a modern terminal with toilets, info desk and shops. Downtown is mostly flat but has stone-mosaic pavements. Viewpoints at Sete Cidades are by road.

Money

Euro (€). Cards widely accepted. Bank and pharmacy near the terminal (official).
