Longyearbyen is the main town of Svalbard, far north of mainland Norway. The port is 2 km from town. Polar bears live here: never walk outside the town limits without an armed guide.
Where Longyearbyen lies
Where your ship docks
The cruise quay is Bykaia (84 m long, takes ships up to 333 m). Ships can also anchor in the fjord and tender ashore.
Shuttle. Only if your cruise line orders it.

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it
Beware
- Polar bears can be anywhere in Svalbard all year. Do not leave town without a guide.
- Fresh water was listed as temporarily unavailable at the port when checked.
- Weather is harsh and can change in minutes.
Do this
- Leave shoes at the door: many buildings ask visitors to remove shoes (local custom).
- Dress in layers, hat and gloves.
Fees, money and access
Rules & fees
- Svalbard environmental fee: NOK 150 per person. Cruise lines add it to your fare.
- Keep at least 300 m from polar bears (500 m from 1 March to 30 June), under 2025 rules.
- Ships calling in Svalbard's national parks may carry at most 200 passengers; tourist landings only at mapped sites with a guide (2025 rules). Big ships mostly see Longyearbyen itself.
- Drones are generally banned in protected areas and within 500 m of bird cliffs from 1 April to 31 August.
- Norway has no cruise passenger tax in 2026. A national fee of NOK 100 per passenger per 24 hours in port is proposed from January 1, 2027, if approved (reported by The Local Norway, March 2026). Norway's separate local tourist tax of up to 3% applies to hotel stays, not cruise passengers.
Accessibility
Docked at Bykaia or tendered, depending on the ship. Town streets are gravel and paved in parts. The 2 km walk is on a road.
Money
Norwegian krone (NOK). Cards, including tap-to-pay, work almost everywhere. Many places take no cash. Bring a card with no foreign transaction fee. Svalbard is tax-free, so some goods cost less.
