Flights from the US

The short answer

Fly in at least one day before the cruise, ideally two. Flight delays happen and the ship will not wait. On one-way cruises book an 'open-jaw' ticket (into one city, home from another), and give yourself a safe gap after the cruise ends on the last day.

Arrive early

  • Overnight flights from the US land in the morning, tired. A day or two in the start city helps with jet lag and protects you if a flight or bag is late.
  • If you miss the ship because your own flight was late, you pay to catch up at the next port. If you bought flights from the cruise line, the line usually helps rebook (check its terms).

Open-jaw tickets

  • Many Europe cruises are one-way (for example, Barcelona to Rome or Amsterdam to Budapest).
  • Book a multi-city ticket: fly into the start city and home from the end city. It is often similar in price to a round trip.

The last day

  • Ships usually arrive early in the morning and guests leave over a few hours. Big ports can be an hour or more from the airport.
  • Avoid early-morning flights home on disembarkation day; afternoon flights or a post-cruise hotel night are safer.

Cruise line air vs booking yourself

  • Cruise line air: transfers and help if delays happen are often bundled, but you may get less choice of times and seats.
  • 'Air deviation' is a paid option on some lines that lets you choose your own dates, airline or class while still booking through the line.
  • Booking yourself: more control and use of miles, but you handle problems yourself and pay for transfers.

Entry rules to know

  • The EU plans to start ETIAS, an online travel authorization for Americans, with a EUR 20 fee (expected late 2026). Travelers under 18 and over 70 will not pay the fee. As of the Dutch government's page, it was not yet operating and a start date would be announced months ahead.
  • Short stays in the Schengen area are normally limited to 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • 'Air deviation' fees and rules were not checked for specific lines.
  • Whether a specific line helps if you miss the ship on cruise-line air depends on each line's terms; not verified per line.
