The short answer
Since October 2025 the EU has replaced passport stamps with a digital record of when you enter and leave. It has been fully in place at every Schengen border since April 10, 2026. The first time you enter, officers take your face photo and scan 4 fingerprints. After that, crossings should be quicker.
What happens the first time
- At your first Schengen entry, by air or sea, officers take a photo of your face and scan 4 fingerprints.
- Your passport is not stamped. The record is digital.
- Some borders have self-service machines or a phone app to speed this up, but you still see an officer.
- Children under 12 do not have fingerprints taken.
Later trips
- Your photo and fingerprints are already on file. Officers just check them.
- With a newer chip passport you may be able to use self-service gates where they exist.
- Your record is kept on file, so the system counts your 90 days for you.
What it means on a cruise
- You register the first time you enter Schengen. If you fly into Rome or Barcelona to board, it usually happens at the airport.
- If your cruise starts outside Schengen, for example in Southampton, Dover or Istanbul, expect it at the first Schengen port or as the ship arrives there.
- Azamara tells guests that registration happens automatically at the border, that guests will be briefed before any port where EES applies, and that shore excursion times were adjusted for it.
- Expect longer lines at the first port or airport. Allow extra time.
Where EES does not apply
- Ireland and Cyprus still stamp passports by hand.
- The UK, Turkey and Montenegro are not part of EES. They run their own checks.

Still being confirmed
- The exact EES start day in October 2025 was not shown on the official page we could read. It says only 'October 2025' and a 6-month rollout ending April 9, 2026.
- Whether a given port registers cruise passengers on board, in the terminal or on the pier varies. No EU page explains cruise-port steps. Follow your cruise line.
