The short answer
Big ocean ships are usually the easiest ships for wheelchairs; the harder part is Europe itself: tenders, cobblestones, steep old towns and long walks from the dock. River ships are smaller and dock in town, but elevators may not reach every deck and you may need to walk through rafted ships.
At a glance
| Region | Ease for limited mobility | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rivers (Danube, Rhine, Seine) | Easier | Dock in town, short distances; but rafting and steps |
| Northern Europe / Baltic | Moderate | Mostly docks; cobbles in old towns |
| Western Med | Moderate | Big ports, long transfers to Rome/Florence |
| Norway fjords | Moderate | Scenery from ship; some tender ports |
| British Isles | Harder | Several tender ports |
| Greek Isles / Adriatic | Hardest | Tenders, steep stairs, crowds |
Hard spots
- Tender ports: you step from the ship onto a moving small boat. Santorini now sends 70% of tendered passengers to Fira, where the climb to town is by cable car, donkey path or stairs.
- Steep, stepped old towns: Dubrovnik, Kotor, Santorini, Capri and many Greek islands.
- Cobblestones are common almost everywhere in old European cities.
- Far-off cities from ports: Rome (from Civitavecchia), Florence (from Livorno) mean long bus or train rides.
- River ships: rafting means crossing other ships; gangways can be steep when water is high or low.
River ship elevators
- Most newer European river ships have elevators, but some older ones do not, and on some (reports for Viking Longships) the elevator does not reach the lowest cabin deck. Uniworld had some ships without elevators as of 2018. Ask about your exact ship and cabin.
Tips
- Ask the line for accessible cabins early; they are few and sell out.
- Choose ports where the ship docks (not tenders) and itineraries with more scenic cruising.
- Ask for 'gentle' or 'slow walkers' tours; many river lines offer them.
- Venice's access fee exempts people with a certified disability and one companion (they must register for a QR code).
- Bring a lightweight folding wheelchair or rollator; ask the line about battery rules for scooters.
